So, you're planning the most important day of your lives and you want it to be exceptional. You want your guests to walk away from your wedding day and remember all the major highlights of the day. Your grand entrance, the food, the entertainment. But don't forget the most important part of all...the decor. With the economy on most people's minds nowadays, it is easy to see why a lot of people would think that the decor can do without certain aspects that normally would have been included. I cannot tell you how many weddings we've created where the decor is the thing that a lot of brides hold back on. To me, the decor is one of those things that you don't have to take a second mortgage out for, but it is the first thing that your guests will see when they arrive. So why wouldn't you want it to be spectacular? One of the things I try to tell our brides is splurge a bit more on the linens and make a statement. We can always created centerpieces with a little less florals and a lot more candle light. But if the linens are just plain old linens, then no one will remember.

The HOW - She was a first year attorney at a Washington DC law firm. He was a seasoned second year attorney at the same firm. It all began when they were staffed on the same case....many billable hours later, they fell in love. Josh proposed by surprising Sharon with a trip to Kiawah Island. He led her up to their suite at The Sanctuary Hotel where the room was covered in rose petals and there were chocolate covered strawberries, champagne, and a candlelight dinner waiting on a balcony overlooking the ocean. As the sun was setting, Josh pulled out a beautiful ring and the rest is history...

For all you brides that wish to book a Charleston Wedding sometime this spring or summer, there are still some vacancies left at outstanding venues. The catch is that you need to be flexible on the days of the week. For instance, consider holding your wedding on a Friday or Sunday instead of a Saturday. Chris and I met in the Fall of 2003 through a friend at an Elon Football game. Over Winter Term (or a mini-mester aka J-term) our friendship grew. In fact, it wasn’t until almost half-way through my Sophomore year, his Junior year, that we officially began dating.
The HOW (we got engaged):
In the Fall of 2008, Chris surprised me by taking me to Bermuda. (He had been very insistent about taking a vacation in the months prior, but I was reluctant because I had just started a new job and had ZERO vacation time.) Chris sorted that out, and called my boss and got me the time off.
While in Bermuda, we explored the island – kayaking, snorkeling, and cycling. On the third night of the trip, Chris suggested a walk down on the beach. With the sun just on the verge of setting, I agreed and we headed off to the beach. Unsatisfied with the first location we stopped at, Chris suggested one of the more private cove beaches at the resort.
Once there I sat in a lounge chair and immediately began star-gazing like a nerd. Chris on the other hand got down on one knee and the rest is history.
The WHERE (Charleston):
We chose Charleston for it’s Southern charm and location. Chris and I have always been fond of South Carolina, and with my love of historic Savannah, GA – Charleston seemed like the logical combination. After much on-line research my mind was made up.
In fact, after my first visit to Charleston on the Charleston Wedding FAM Weekend Tour I was overjoyed with the selection. (In due time… step B will be to move to Charleston… or at least the Region.)
So why did I decide to put my wedding day in the hands of A Charleston Event? That was actually the easy part. ACE simply understood what I was looking for. They know the Charleston area far better than I ever could as an outsider trying to plan a destination wedding. Elyn’s smiling face put me at ease and when I met Christy, I knew that they would make sure my wedding vision would come to life.
The PLANNING:
When I first got engaged my first thought was OMG where do I being? How do I communicate my vision? Do I even have a vision? Wait... I have to make how many decisions??
Well with the help of my mom and Christy, I have stayed the course and can happily say most of the major decisions are out of the way.
Venue – check. Photographer – check. Caterer – check. Music – check.Save the dates – check.
But the bigger question still remains: How do I connect all of the things I love in my “Inspiration” folder* with the loose vision I have for our Wedding day?
Well, I’m learning to self-edit. Weeding out the items that I like but don’t love; items that were too kitschy or too trendy; finding myself in the mass of images I have collected over the last 13 months.
So, that’s where I am now. 5 months out. Connecting all of the little details and decisions to color in the frame work the major decisions have outlined. I just can’t wait to stand there on May 30th and see the total picture come together. But first one more visit to Charleston to finalize details and see table mock-ups and vendors at ACE’s new office and showroom! (Eek!)
Most brides want a photo album that tells the story and incorporates all the images that they love and will treasure. They are also opting for the less traditional photos and going more for the storybook albums with fun pics and including their engagement photos in the albums as well. The photo above was taken by Taylor Stewart during the couple's engagement portrait session. Doing these photos not only captures the couple in a more relaxed mood, but it enables photographer and couples to get to know each other more before the big day.
Going on different locations for photo shoots is so much fun and can't be beat for destination weddings. On the wedding day itself, try getting some time to yourselves without anyone else around so you can take in the events of the day and capture some intimate moments that will not be the normal traditional posed shots. Seen here above, Nathan Bell captured the couple downtown on the way to their reception. They stopped for some relaxed shots between the church and reception site and you can see by the photo how relaxed they were. This is no doubt a favorite for the album and one for the story book romance the couple share. Its the type of photo that children later look at and say, Mommy, you and Daddy look like movie stars. I know that sounds corny, but when you think about it, isn't that what we look for in our photos? Especially on your wedding day. The last of your photos should always include your "Happily Ever After" photo. Seen here, Sean and Danielle could be the Bogart and Bacall of the 21st century.
